Okay so I have to make and awful confession. The first thing Ben and I ate in Japan ...
... was McDonald's.
But we had good reason!! ... kind of
We'd had a long flight and a long day and we were very hungry. Hanzomon (although near the Imperial Palace) is a pretty quiet area compared to a lot of other place in Tokyo. We used our Tokyo Map app and Google Maps to find restaurants in our vicinity but many were closed cafes or Kanji I couldn't translate! And then ... we saw it.
I will admit, I don't particularly like McDonald's on a good day in the UK, but we were so tired and hungry, we just wanted to eat and go to sleep (at this point, we were not as well versed in the many amazing late night convenience stores Japan offers), so we set the course on the map and headed out.
And to be honest, I'm glad we did :) We were led to the Kasumigaseki Building, which is a 36 story skyscraper with tonnes of restaurants on the lower levels and a beautiful fountain outside. It is regarded as the first modern skyscraper in Japan!
The service was the best I have ever experienced in a McDonald's (or any fast food restaurant for that matter), and the food seemed much nicer than McDonald's in the UK, with slightly bigger portions too.
